Keeping yourself fit over Christmas

02/12/2010

When it comes to fitness, Christmas can be a tough time of year. So much temptation, cold weather, dark nights and a busy schedule can affect your normal routine. However with the right advice you can overcome these factors and still maintain your fitness routine(whilst still enjoying yourself). Below are some factors that you need to take in to your consideration.

Keep your immune system strong

At this time of year the common cold and flu lurks in the air. Although there is no cure for these viral infections you can make your body well equipped to fight them by eating immune system boosting foods and con summing adequate levels of vitamin C and vitamin D.

Sleep well

Sleep is important throughout the year. It helps you concentrate during the day and promotes good memory. However over the Christmas period it is much more difficult to get your normal amount of sleep. Your free time is often taken up by family commitments, Christmas parties and Christmas shopping. Your sleep is normally sacrificed to be able to fit all of these things in to your schedule. To ensure that you do get enough sleep during the festive period; try and get a couple of extra hours on the days where you have some free time. This way you will not be too tired to do your normal exercise routine.

Fit in your exercise

Although Christmas is a busy time of the year. Try and fit in your exercise. If you find that this is hard then there are many ways to fit it in. Try working out at home instead of going to the gym. Try a fitness DVD or contact a personal trainer to teach you some exercises that you may be able to do at home. Eat the right foods

There are many temptations when it comes to food during the Christmas period. We all like to indulge over Christmas however try and keep it in moderation. If you know you are going out to a dinner party in the evening make sure that you eat a healthy breakfast and lunch. When at Christmas parties try and drink alcohol in moderation. If you feel you consumed too much alcohol then try and get up and do some exercise to burn off those calories.

Buy presents with a fitness theme

If you are thinking of losing some weight in the new year then try and think of gifts for others with a fitness theme e.g. Fitness DVD’s, a football for your son, or a dance game for a games console. That way you can enjoy spending time together whilst burning off calories.
